Nerds, geeks, weirdos and gorgeous women in costumes. There’s nothing quite like the excitement of Comic-Con International in San Diego. Dave and I took a walk during lunch over towards the convention center, ran into some zombies and asked Warren the Ape what he’s most excited about. Check it out below.

To say we’re enormous fans of San Diego artist Jocelyn Duke is an understatement. When we teamed up with Furni to release the Freelancer Notepads we knew we had to let Jocelyn have her way with one. And have her way she did. Check out the images below but for all the glory, we’ll be displaying the entire notepad at our pop-up shop next Wednesday. Plus, we’ll soon be debuting a super new product that we collaborated with Jocelyn on. It drops at Renegade Craft Fair so come up to LA and get in on the action. It’s hot. (Click any of the images below to see more collaborations in our Freelancer series).

Growing up and going to school in the northeast, Dave and I are very comfortable with a concept that seems foreign to so many in Southern California – public transit. So I’m real happy to see that the Park 2 Park Shuttle is back in action Fridays and Saturdays starting tonight. I’ll leave the details to the website, but basically the shuttle will get you anywhere from Normal Heights to South Park for $5 a night, including some major drink + food discounts at local sponsors. My dream route? Pizza and beers at Blind Lady before heading out to South Park (Whistle Stop and Hamilton’s) for the night. I don’t like saying no to fun so this is going to get me home safely without any troubles from the five-o. Seriously though, try it. I think you’ll warm up to it once you do. I know I did.

Anyone in the know realizes the best of most everything is in San Diego proper, not the outskirts. But I will say I’m really glad to see URBANIST guide return for a 2nd print issue. For those unfamiliar to the name and game, it’s a handy fold out guide to SD’s hippest restaurants, boutiques, galleries, salons, bars and nightlife (heavily focused on the independent spots). And I’m huge on that because independent business owners are the people loving their work and working their love the hardest. The guide’s also perfect for visitors looking to avoid the tourist traps and even as a local I always find out about a few cool places I’ve overlooked.

I’m getting Helvetica-esque excited to screen Art & Copy tomorrow night. It’s a powerful new film about advertising and inspiration, two things I’m fascinated / borderline obsessed with. Plus, Doug Prey’s resume is all aces (Scratch, Surfwise, Hype!). Tickets available here, seriously, you don’t want to miss this!

Mike Maxwell is on a mission to let San Diego know which street-artist runs this town. The man’s been busy bombing walls all over Barrio Logan and East Village. Here’s a killer time lapse video taken by our pals Set & Drift on a recent mural. Get more of Maxwell here.
interview with marcus mumford before the sold-out MUMFORD&SONS show at the Belly Up Tavern. off-camera, we discussed the LAKERS (marcus is a HUGE international fan).

Ford asked us to recreate MTV Cribs but with our new Fiesta. They gave us 1 day to make this so we grabbed Creative Casualties, a 12-pack of Tecate and snuck into some rich dude’s driveway in La Jolla. Here’s the result…

This Tuesday, San Diego’s Museum of Photographic Arts will play host to High Tech High: Media Arts end of year senior exhibition. Over 75 students will be showcasing their creativity and we couldn’t be more excited! To show our support, we’ll be opening a mini pop-up store with our latest Artist Series t-shirts, books and notepads. Each shirt was designed by students and we donate 100% of proceeds back to their school. So stop by and spread the “doing good is good business” mantra. Doors open at 5:30pm.
Chris Cantore is Back … Older, Wiser, Happier and Mastering New Media
Written by: Kelly Cisek | Photography by: James Norton
What a long, strange trip it’s been for Chris Cantore. Although many San Diegans still associate his name with traditional radio, it’s been two roller-coaster years since the DJ last signed off the air of his [...]
